Yes, our Iraqi adventure started on a false premise. Yes, our presence in Iraq is making lots of Muslims (and others) hate our country. And no, having troops in Iraq will probably not deter terrorism in the U.S. or Europe. But we still shouldn’t leave Iraq until we can hang up a real “Mission Accomplished” banner.
Some of you condemn him for being a “libral” or some other evil like that, but where the rubber meets the road, Bill Nelsonis one of you! Example: He voted to kill the Dynasty Tax. No kidding. He voted against taxing super-rich people’s estates. At all. As in, according to Nelson it’s fine to tax the hourly pay some poor bastard gets for fixing roofs in the Florida summer sun, but it’s a no-no to collect even a dime from a Wal~Mart heir’s millions. Those of you who consider what you call the “death tax” a pressing issue should donate money to Nelson’s campaign TODAY!
Everyone with a blog gets comment & “linkback” spam. I’ve found a solution. It’s Akismet. Everyone with a blog or other site that allows open posting should use Akismet or something like it.
Rain, moderate winds, lots of TV news coverage. That’s all Tropical Storm (briefly Hurricane) Alberto has meant to us here in Bradenton, Florida. Video:
Free software purists who don’t want to run (or can’t run) the proprietary Macromedia Flash client should check out Gnash.
MONDAY, JUNE 12, BRADENTON, FLORIDA — Yesterday we had a little wind, maybe 30 kt. gusts at most. No big deal. Today tropical storm Alberto seems to be producing lots of rain and not much else. Once again, I made a video (and uploaded it to crappy-but-free YouTube) instead of typing.
A quick video I made about the Rawk Shop, a cool little store a few blocks away from us in the Village of the Arts. This one even has music (by Kevin MacCleod, downloaded from his wonderful incompetech.com site.) Fancy, eh?
One problem with these free video hosting services is that delivery quality is awful. My original video is dead-clear. Grrr…..
NOTE ADDED LATER: I’m thinking I might use YouTube for “quick and dirty” hosting, but upload clear versions to ourmedia.org in MPEG2 or some other less-crappy format than Flash that doesn’t take a proprietary player — but may take one hell of a long time to download. Internet video delivery is always a “good - fast - cheap: pick two out of three” situation. Except it’s one out of three, really.
For a change, I decided to talk into my video camera instead of typing. It’s a short piece, less than two minutes long:
And here’s a link to how members of the House of Representatives voted on Net Neutrality. You might want to consider voting against those who voted against Net Neutrality — and even think about donating money or time to their opponenets’ campaigns.
Hurricanes…. insanely high home and business insurance rates jumping even higher because of hurricanes… low wages — now combined with high housing prices… and a bunch of other problems. Still, the conventional wisdom says 1000 of you move to Florida every day. If you’re one of the people thinking about moving here, you ought to look at this animated piece starring Rippy the Alligator before you do. If this doesn’t talk you out of your Florida move, I don’t know what will.
