Maker Faire Tokyo

O’Reilly Japan had a very successful weekend running the Tokyo Maker Faire.  Sadly, we were not able to attend, but Ian Lesnet of Dangerous Prototypes did, and had this to say:

Of all the Maker Faires we’ve visited in the last year, the Tokyo Maker Faire stands out as one of the quirkiest, funniest, yet most refined on the calendar.”

Moon Maker – 3D Printer on the moon?

A team of materials scientists at Washington State University has been using material found in moon rocks in a 3D printer.  They have been given a lump of “lunar regolith simulant” (apparently that’s a material that shares many properties of moon rocks) by NASA to use in their research.

The hope is that one day, whilst strolling across the lunar landscape and finding oneself in need of a spare part or tool, we will be able to simply pick up some moon dust from the surface and use that to 3D print what we need!

Of course it will be some time before we find ourselves on the moon and before the technology will be ready.  Until that time, why not take a look at some of the projects you could turn your hands to, from the special “Space” edition of MAKE Magazine (issue 24):

 

Makers changing our world for the better

The phenomenon we call the Maker movement is characterised by many things, among them the ability to cheaply and quickly prototype hardware, but fostering community is arguably as important.  Building on open hardware principles and with access to inexpensive computer-controlled tools and software, some people are using their inventions for the common good.  One person with a bright idea and a little technology can make a big difference.  Just think what someone with your mad skills could do?

A couple of examples of some open hardware projects which could help change our world for the better are:

The Conservation Drones Project’s mission is to share their “knowledge for building low-cost Conservation Drones to help conservation workers and researchers in developing countries do their jobs a lot more effectively and cost efficiently”.

The autopilot system of Conservation Drones is based on the ‘ArduPilot Mega’ (APM) autopilot system, which is being developed by an online community (diydrones.com).

Hexayurt
With just £75 worth of plywood and screws, almost anyone can build a shelter known as a Hexayurt that can last three years.  The simple DIY structure could be a critical temporary solution for people left homeless following natural disasters and war.

Want to help a worthwhile cause whilst hacking and making cool stuff?

The Zoological Society of London is looking for developers to volunteer their expertise to help build an Android version of the Instant Wild app to help create Arduino-powered sensor networks to monitor remote habitats.  Contact: Alasdair Davies, Technical Advisor of Conservation Programmes.

The world-famous Maker Faire returns to Newcastle for a weekend of robots, garden shed inventions, the occasional fireball and lots more. 300 makers will present their interactive projects alongside playful performances, installations and workshops.

The Call for Makers is now open– deadline for submissions is Midnight, Sunday 20 January  2013.
